The
Nurse Continence Advisor (NCA) role is an independent practice
model which focuses on conservative methods of managing incontinence.
It was established in 1997 as a continuing education certificate
program at McMaster University School of Nursing using a self-directed,
problem-oriented approach to developing evidence-based practice
in continence care. It is the only North American university-based
program for educating nurse continence advisors.
The one year program combines academic
study with preceptored and independent clinical practise and has
been recognized for 2 full credits for nurses in post diploma programs
at universities across the country. NCA's are now practising in
most provinces with 200 nurses having now completed the program.
This group has now formed a national association, Canadian Nurse
Continence Advisors Association and are recognized as an affiliate
group within Canadian Nurses Association.
